Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Tomorrow we will test our Health Care residents for COVID 19.  On Tuesday we will test our St. Paul Hermitage Staff.  We continue to monitor our residents closely and so far everyone remains healthy.  Our two residents who tested positive are also experiencing minimal symptoms.  They are being closely monitored on our COVID unit.  We will keep you posted as tests come in later this week.

Tomorrow we will begin to have communal dining and activities.  We will also open the beauty shop for our residential residents.  On Wednesday we will begin to have outdoor visitation for our residential residents.  Please note below that we have changed the evening hours because it is getting darker earlier.

Residential Outdoor Family Visitation will take place Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

Afternoon Hours:

1st Floor 1:00 pm- 2:00 pm

2nd Floor 2:15 pm- 3:15 pm

3rd Floor 3:30 pm- 4:30 pm

Evening Hours:

1st Floor 5:00 pm- 6:00 pm

2nd Floor and 3rd Floor 6:15 pm- 7:15 pm

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have two active COVID positive residents and two residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. Twelve of our employees have recovered.  We have one out on quarantine.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.  We have 2 staff tests pending.

The past few weeks have been difficult for all of us.  On Friday I read a beautiful reflection in my prayer book.  The reflection by Deacon Jay Cornier spoke about living for the “third day.”  He said, “To follow Jesus is to always look forward to the “third day”: the trust that God leads us out of the darkness and despair of our Good Fridays into the light and fulfillment of the resurrection.”  We may be in the Good Friday of our pandemic journey, but I know that God will see us through to the light of the resurrection.  Know of my prayer and love for each of you.

Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns during this difficult time.  If you need to get a hold of me during the coming days, please call my cell phone or send me an e-mail.  I will be in and out of my office as I will need to assist in caring for our residents.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Yesterday was filled with a mixture of emotions.  We were grateful that our two residents who were on the COVID unit had recovered and were cleared to go back to our Health Care Center.  Yesterday evening we received word that two more Health Care residents and one Health Care staff member tested positive for COVID 19.  This was very hard news to receive.

We will continue to test our Health Center residents every five days.  We will test them again on Monday.  Because of our new cases, we will have to continue to have our Health Care residents quarantine until we go 14 days without a new positive case.

I spoke with the infection preventionist from ISDH today.  She agreed with the actions we are taking in the Health Care Center to mitigate the spread of COVID 19.  She also agreed that since our residential residents have not had any positive test results, we can begin to have communal dining, activities and open the beauty shop for our residential residents.  She also said that we can have outdoor visitation for our Residential Residents this week.  If your loved one lives in Residential you can call to sign up for visitation starting tomorrow.  Please note below that we have changed the evening hours because it is getting darker earlier.

Residential Outdoor Family Visitation will take place Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

Afternoon Hours:

1st Floor 1:00 pm- 2:00 pm

2nd Floor 2:15 pm- 3:15 pm

3rd Floor 3:30 pm- 4:30 pm

Evening Hours:

1st Floor 5:00 pm- 6:00 pm

2nd Floor and 3rd Floor 6:15 pm- 7:15 pm

The Marion County Health Department has opened indoor visitation for assisted living/residential residents.  However, we are not able to have any indoor visitation until we go 14 days without a new COVID case.  I do realize that the weather is getting colder, we continue to work with the state to address this concern.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have two active COVID positive residents and two resident recoveries.  We have had twelve COVID positive employees and twelve total COVID 19 cases. Eleven of our employees have recovered.  We have one out on quarantine.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.  We have 2 staff tests pending.

Know of my prayers for you as we journey through this time of having active Covid cases in our building.  I know that this adds stress and worry to your days.  Please know that we continue to do our best with the care we provide to your loved ones.  We are grateful that you have entrusted us with their care.

Our staff tests are slowly starting to trickle in.  We have 30 of them back so far.  The wonderful news is that the test results we have received are all negative.  I will continue to keep you updated as tests come back in.  If all our tests continue to come back negative, I will let you know our plan for opening up communal dining services, activities, and outdoor visitation.

I know that there has been a lot of information in the media regarding Health Care Facilities being able to allow indoor visitation.  We receive guidance from three regulatory bodies: Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services, Indiana State Health Department and Marion County Health Department.  We are required to follow the strictest of the guidance to be in regulatory compliance.  Currently, Marion County is still under a no indoor visitation except at end of life.  That is why you will hear that facilities in other counties can have indoor visitation and we cannot.

I have been and will continue to be working on policies to submit to ISDH regarding excursions for residential residents, Mass in the chapel, our fall plans for outdoor visitation, and winter plans for indoor visitation.  Once I get these policies approved, I will share the information with you, our residents and in-service our staff.  I want nothing more than for life to return to normal. However, as I am learning through this pandemic, we must take one day at a time, one step at time.  God is leading our community and we will continue to make this journey together.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have two COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had eleven COVID positive employees and twelve total COVID 19 cases. Nine of our employees have recovered.  We have two out on quarantine.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.  We have 49 staff tests and 67 resident tests pending.

We are now in the 7th month of the pandemic.  I know that it is very hard, and It is easy to feel down and to struggle with all that is going on.  This is very natural and it is important to acknowledge how we feel.  There are days when I find it very hard and wonder when it will end.  This morning, as I took time for my morning prayer, a thought came to me.  Each day we have a choice to be a living lamentation or a song of praise.  I felt like God was speaking to my heart.  Today I chose to be a song of praise.  Each day we can acknowledge how we are feeling and then make a choice of how we will live the day.  Let us all try to be a song of praise in a world that is so in need of joy and light.

Tonight we are still waiting for our resident test results.  It is disappointing to share this news.  The lab director has promised me that the results will be back tomorrow.    With the new regulations and increased testing guidelines for staff and residents, it is taking longer to process the PCR tests than originally expected.  The lab is working to make the processing more efficient.  Hopefully, our turnaround time will improve.  I will continue to work with the lab on this process.  We will test residents again Wednesday.  I spoke with Dr. Hurley this evening.  We originally were going to test residents again tomorrow.  Dr. Hurley felt we should wait to receive the last tests back before testing again.  All the testing supplies are here, Joan and I will begin testing early Wednesday morning.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have two COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had eleven COVID positive employees and twelve total COVID 19 cases. Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today was a quiet Saturday.  Our residents enjoyed working on puzzles in their rooms, watching the Hallmark Fall Harvest Movies that are on all weekend and window visits with family.  Today we lowered our flag to half-staff, to honor and remember the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg spent life fighting for justice and equality for all Americans.  Let us continue to pray for our county, which she loved and for her family as they grieve her loss.

We have 2 staff tests and 69 resident tests pending.

I was hoping to have some test results to share with you this evening, but they are all still processing.  I will continue to update you as our test results come back.

Today was another sunny day.  We opened some windows to get the fresh air in.  We are trying to enjoy every bit of sunshine and fresh air that we can before we enter fall.  Sr. Susan Marie made another special treat for our residents.  They enjoyed an afternoon treat of jello with mandarin oranges.  We also had virtual and window visits, which our residents enjoy.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today Joan and I completed the testing of all of the residents both in Health Care and in Residential. It was a long day but the tests are now at the lab.  We have not received the results from the staff testing that we did on Tuesday.  As soon as we receive results, I will let you know.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have two COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had eleven COVID positive employees and twelve total COVID 19 cases. Nine of our employees have recovered.  We have two out on quarantine currently.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.  Currently we have 79 staff tests pending and 69 resident tests pending.

Today was another beautiful day.  It is such a gift to have these lovely last days of summer.  There are so many people struggling through natural disasters in our country.  Let us hold in prayer those dealing with the fires in the West and all of those in the South who are dealing with the winds and torrential rain from the hurricane.  May God be with them and surround them with grace.

Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns during this difficult time.  If you need to get a hold of me during the coming days, please call my cell phone or send me an e-mail.  I will not be in my office as I will need to assist in caring for our residents. I am working the floor in Health Care tonight. Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

I have wonderful news to share.  Last Saturday we tested all the residents on A-hall, since that is where our COVID positive residents lived.  All 29 of our tests came back negative.  We are grateful for the continued blessing of no new cases.  ISDH was also in our building today for an infection control survey.  Our survey came back deficiency free.  They feel that we have done a good job implementing all of the new COVID 19 guidance.  We continue to work hard to do all that we can to prevent the spread of COVID 19 in our building.

Joan and I were unable to complete the resident testing today.  We will test all residents beginning early tomorrow morning.  We did not receive the test kits from the lab in time.  It ended up working out since Joan and I spent a good portion of the day with ISDH.  We will do our testing tomorrow.  Dr. Hurley also rounded in the building today to check on things.  He feels that all our residents are doing well.  We will continue to monitor all residents closely for signs and symptoms of COVID 19 and remain in isolation until we have gone 14 days without a new positive in our community.  We will test residents every 3-5 days and staff weekly.  Dr. Hurley and ISDH did say that residents can begin going to doctor’s appointments as long as the doctor knows in advance that we have active COVID cases in our building.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have two COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had eleven COVID positive employees and twelve total COVID 19 cases. Nine of our employees have recovered.  We have two out on quarantine currently.  We have 77 staff tests.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns during this difficult time.  If you need to get a hold of me during the coming days, please call my cell phone or send me an e-mail.  I will not be in my office as I will need to assist in caring for our residents.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.  I will call you back as soon as I can.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

At our Infection Control meeting last evening, we made the difficult decision to quarantine all of St. Paul Hermitage.  We feel that it is best at this time to take this precaution.  We want to keep our community healthy and to minimize the spread of COVID 19 within it.  We will test all residents on Health Care and Residential every three days until we go fourteen days without a positive.  Our next testing day will be Wednesday.  Staff will continue to be tested weekly.

We continue to monitor our residents closely.  At this time, no other residents are showing any signs or symptoms of COVID 19. We thank God for this blessing.  Let us continue to pray for good health of our residents.

We are now staffing three separate areas: Residential, Health Care and our COVID Unit.  We are utilizing our entire team, including management, to care for our residents.  If you need to get a hold of me during the coming days, please call my cell phone or send me an e-mail.  I will not be in my office as I will need to assist in caring for our residents.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.  I will call you back as soon as I can.

Nine of our employees have recovered.  We have two out on quarantine currently.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Let us continue to pray for one another and hold each other close even as we are apart.  Thank you for the gift of entrusting us with your loved one’s care.  We do not take that for granted.

Blessings,

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today we continued to settle back into quarantine.   We continue to monitor our residents in the Health Care Center.  They remain healthy at this time.  We will test all residents again on Wednesday.  I have had some questions regarding window visits for our residential residents.  A way to handle this during quarantine is to have them to come down to the lobby for window visits one at a time.  We have asked the residents to call the front desk prior to coming down to make sure no other resident is in the lobby at the same time.  Please be aware of others who may want to have a window visit and adjust your time accordingly.  We also have virtual visits that you can schedule through activities.  For residential virtual chats please contact Sr. Susan Marie at Residential.Activities@stpaulhermitage.org.  For Health Care virtual chats please contact Misti at Healthcare.Activties@stpaulhermitage.org.  We look forward to helping you connect with your residents over the next couple of weeks.

Dear Residents, Families, and Friends:

Over the past six months we have been journeying through this pandemic together.  Our staff have worked tirelessly to keep our residents safe and healthy.  This virus is quiet and individuals who are infected can go days without showing symptoms or never have any symptoms at all.  Late last evening we received word that we had another direct caregiver who is positive and two Health Center residents.  We immediately contacted the families of the two residents who are positive and moved them to our COVID unit. We will continue to update their families multiply times a day on their health status.  Early this morning we called all the families of our Health Center residents to notify them of the cases. This has been our worst fear, yet God is in our midst.  Let us continue to pray for one another and for the health of our community at this time.

The safety of our residents and staff is our top priority. To reduce the spread and impact of COVID-19, we continue to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  We are staying in close communication with local and state health officials to ensure we are taking the appropriate steps under the current circumstances, including:

  • Isolating residents who test positive in a separate COVID 19 unit with designated staff.

  •  Daily meetings between our Medical Director, Infection Preventionist, Administrator, Director of Nursing and Unit Manager.

  • Enhanced infection control precautions, such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when we care for residents, increasing the availability of hand sanitizer, and more frequent cleaning and disinfecting of high-touch surfaces.

  • Testing Health Center residents every three days and facility staff weekly.

  •  Screening residents and staff for COVID-19 symptoms, as well as anyone else who must enter our facility. Only staff and volunteers who must enter the building will be permitted entry.

  •  Restricting visitation except for situations such as end of life.

  • Continuing to provide and requiring facemasks, goggles and shields for all staff to wear.

  • Continuing to provide cloth face coverings for residents, if tolerated and following CDC guidance: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/long-term-care.html.

  • Continuing to require all others entering the facility to wear cloth face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19

  •  Postponing group activities, communal dinning, outside family visitation and helping residents to practice social distancing in the Health Care Center.

We encourage you to review the CDC website for information about COVID-19, including its symptoms, how it spreads, and actions you can take to protect your health:

http://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.

All of us at St. Paul Hermitage understand that this is a serious situation and might be frightening. Additional information about coping with stress can be found on the CDC website:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/managing-stress-anxiety.html.

We will continue to provide you with regular updates about the situation and will promptly notify you if we identify any additional residents or staff with confirmed COVID-19. We encourage you to contact us with questions and concerns. Please call Sr. Heather at 317-213-8430, email us at administrator@stpaulhermitage.org, or visit our website at www.stpaulhermitage.org.  Know of my prayers for each of you during this difficult time.  Please pray for our staff as they continue to show such dedication in their loving care of our residents.   We are not alone.  God will help us on this difficult road.

Blessings,

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

I have some wonderful news to share.  We have received twenty-seven of our staff tests back and they were all negative.  One of the employees who was out sick is negatives for COVID.  Their doctor believes it is an upper respiratory infection.  They are cleared to come back to work.  I spoke with Dr. Hurley today.  We discussed as we enter fall, we may see an increase in respiratory infections and flu.  This year we will need to continue to test individuals who have respiratory symptoms.  An employee who shows respiratory symptoms may or may not have COVID.  We will continue to keep you informed regarding the health of our employees and residents.  We do not want to cause anxiety, but we want to be transparent about the health of our community.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had ten COVID positive employees and eleven total COVID 19 cases. Nine of our employees have recovered.  We have one out on quarantine currently.  We also have one staff member quarantining since they are symptomatic and awaiting test results.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.  We have two staff tests pending.  We have 44 resident tests pending.

Blessings on your weekend.  Enjoy these final days of summer.  We will keep you updated as we continue to receive test results.

Blessings,

Sr. Heather Jean

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

We have altered our virtual chat times to include a weekend day to accommodate those who work fulltime during the week.  This new schedule will begin Tuesday September 15.  Video chats will be available Tuesday-Saturday from 9:00 am-11:30 and 1:00 pm-3:30 pm.  Please contact Misti Ballard to set up a time for your virtual chat.  She can be reached at healthcare.activities@stpaulhermitage.org.   We will not be able to have virtual chats again until Tuesday September 15.  Our three employees who are ill at this time were scheduled to work this weekend.  Sam, Kathy, Misti, Megan, Pat, Janet, and I will be assisting in caring for our Health Care residents since we will be short staffed.  We will not be able to cover the shifts and have virtual chats.  Thank you for your understanding in this matter as caring for your loved ones is our number one priority.  We look forward to offering virtual chats again on Tuesday.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had ten COVID positive employees and eleven total COVID 19 cases. Nine of our employees have recovered.  We have one out on quarantine currently.  We also have two staff members quarantining since they are symptomatic and awaiting test results.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.  We have 29 staff tests pending.  We have 44 resident tests pending.

Please continue to pray for our three staff who ill at this time.  We will keep you updated as we continue to receive test results.

Blessings,

Sr. Heather Jean

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today we continued to implement new ISDH regulations.  Our staff have begun to wear shields or goggles in addition to our surgical face masks.  Since we need to get closer than six feet to residents it is recommended that the shield or goggles be added to our current uniform.  If you see staff in shields or goggles this a new safety measure during the pandemic.

As I shared yesterday one of our tests came back positive during our staff testing. We tested all our Health Care residents today as a precautionary measure because the individual who tested positive works primarily in the Health Care Center.  The tests will be returned to us in 48-72 hours.  We also had a third employee that works in the Health Center out ill.  They were tested today.

Yesterday was a hard day for all of us as we received news of a positive COVID test result for our employee and the subsequent need to cancel outdoor family visitation for our Health Care families.  It was disappointing for our whole St. Paul Hermitage Community.  I, too, grieved the fact that I had to shut things down again.  However, today I was reminded of how resilient our community is and that together we will get through the coming days.  We have already made it through six months of this COVID 19 pandemic.  Let us continue to pray for one another and hold each other close even as we are apart.  Thank you for the gift of entrusting us with your loved one’s care.  We do not take that for granted.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Tomorrow we will be conducting our weekly staff testing.  This week we will only be able to test half of our employees using our rapid testing equipment.  We are waiting on more rapid tests to arrive.  They are currently back ordered due to the current demand.  They are estimated to ship out September 23.  The rest of our tests will be the PCR test and will be sent to our lab for processing.  We will not have those tests back until later in the week.  We will update you on those results as they come in.  I will let you know the results of our rapid tests tomorrow.  Pray for a smooth day of testing.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees and ten total COVID 19 cases. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

I hope each of you had a wonderful Labor Day weekend.  Our residents enjoyed spending time outdoors, visiting with family, playing bingo, and working on puzzles.  Blessings on your coming week.  May it be filled with many graces.

Blessings,

Sr. Heather Jean

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today we had some rain during patio time, but that did not stop our residential residents from getting visits in with their loved ones.  Our residents really seem to be enjoying these last days of summer even with the rain.  Thank you for your willingness to visit rain or shine.  I am happy it was only drizzling and that all were able to keep dry under our umbrellas.  Your visit adds much joy to the lives of your loved ones.

I have received many e-mails regarding who can and who cannot visit at this time.  Currently, we allow the spouse or significant other of a resident, as well as the adult children of our residents to visit.  In the future, we also hope to open visitation up to in-laws.  However, at this time this has not been approved by the state.  For individuals who do not have a spouse, significant other and children, we have allowed them to name up to six individuals who are over eighteen years of age to visit.  We cannot have anyone under the age of eighteen visit at this time, even in end of life situations.  This is not a St. Paul Hermitage rule.  It is part of the current rules of participation that we are required to follow as a facility licensed by the State of Indiana.  It is to help minimize the spread of COVID 19.  Thank you for your understanding.

Thank you to all who have honored our staff members who are concretely living out our values of hospitality and teamwork.  We will continue to do this throughout the month of September.  Please continue to send me your experiences of hospitality and teamwork lived out day to day.  I am enjoying your e-mails filled with wonderful experiences.  We are blessed to have such a great team!

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees and ten total COVID 19 cases. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.  We will be conducting our weekly staff testing on Tuesday.

Know of my prayers for each of you.   Have a happy Labor Day.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today we enjoyed some time on our patios.  It was a beautiful summer day.  It was warm with intermittent sun and a nice breeze.  Our residents really seem to be enjoying these last days of summer.  I am grateful for these days that allow us to get outside and enjoy one another.  I continue to work with the state to come up with a plan for our outdoor visitation this fall.  We will be altering our hours, adding lights and probably some heaters.  I will send out an updated policy once our plan is approved and ready to move forward.  Thank you for your patience as we move through the planning process.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees and ten total COVID 19 cases. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

I will be taking Friday and Saturday off this week.  I will be at the monastery from mid-day tomorrow until mid-day Sunday.  I will not put out an evening update on Friday or Saturday.  If you need anything on my days off, please contact Sam Ndungu, Unit Manager.  He is on-call this weekend.  He can be reached at 317-213-0107.

Know of my prayers for each of you.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today, I spent a good part of the day working with Dr. Hurley, ISDH, Leading Age and Medline to try to plan for next week’s weekly testing.  Our facility was only issued enough tests for one week.  Unfortunately, only two vendors make the tests that go with our Point of Care testing machine.  Medline, who we already partner with, does not have the tests kits currently.  They are backordered until Mid-October.  The other vendor is not one that we have a pre-existing business relationship with and they are not accepting new customers because of the current demand for test kits, PPE, and COVID related items.  We will need to use our lab for testing until we are able to get the test kits from Medline.  This is disappointing news.  The rapid tests are much easier and have less wait time.  Please continue to pray for us as we iron out the implementation of the latest CMS requirements.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees and ten total COVID 19 cases. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

The weather was great today for our patio time and family visitation.  Intermittent showers are in the forecast tomorrow, but one never knows for sure what Indiana weather will bring.  Hopefully, the rain will not interfere with patio visits.

Know of my prayers for each of you.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today we tested employees using our point of care rapid testing machine.  The new process went very well.  We tested 93 employees and business associates.  All tests came back negative.  We are grateful for continued good health and our staff’s efforts to follow our infection control procedures.

We need to alter our beauty shop schedule once again.  Our new beautician Tammy will begin tomorrow with orientation.  She is the wife of Paul, our maintenance supervisor.  She will be doing hair for our Health Center residents on Tuesday and Thursday.  Liz will be doing residential residents’ hair on Monday’s and Friday’s.  We are grateful for our beauty shop operators.  To sign up for a beauty shop appointments residents and family members can call 317-786-2261 ex. 248.
