Resident Family Council

The St. Paul Hermitage Resident Family Council is a consumer group composed of relatives and friends of the Health Care Residents.  They meet at St. Paul Hermitage once a month. This group focuses on a variety of objectives to meet its goals.  The council has an advisor, usually a Social Service Staff Member, who assists the council but is not considered a member.  We believe family involvement makes a health care facility like a home rather than an institution.

The St. Paul Hermitage Resident Family Council has two main goals:

  • To protect and improve the quality of life at St. Paul Hermitage.

  • To give families a voice in decisions that affect them and their residents.

What are the specific purposes within these general goals?

  • Welcome and support for new families

  • Education and information

  • Action on concerns and complaints

  • Communication within the Health Care Center

  • Services and activities for residents

  • Legislative action

Welcome and Support

The St. Paul Hermitage Resident Family Council offers the following for family members:

  • Contact family member care giver of new residents for orientation

  • Plan and implement education programs for family members of residents

  • Provide a brochure for the St. Paul Hermitage‚Äôs admission packet

Family Council Meeting Schedule

The St. Paul Hermitage family council meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM in the Healthcare Conference Room.  The council does not meet in June, July or August unless there are concerns which need to be discussed

The Resident Family Council protects residents who are physically or mentally unable to voice their own concerns and needs.  Providing advocacy is an important function of the Resident Family Council.

Advocacy for the residents is achieved in some of the following ways:

  • The Resident Family Council studies the St. Paul Hermitage facility survey results

  • They develop their own agenda.  Insight from family members may differ from those of the health care provider.  The council needs and deserves to be heard.

  • The council helps to keep lines of communication open between family members and the administration of St. Paul Hermitage.  Since family members communicate with department heads regarding  concerns or recommendations, the Resident Family Council discusses concerns that have not received attention and can reveal issues that are on the minds of family members.

  • By working with the administration the council allows the staff to deal directly with family concerns and ideas.  They provide important information that can decrease resident and staff turnover by creating workable ways to deal with family dissatisfaction.

  • The Resident Family Council plays an important role in improving the quality of lives of the residents.
