Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

We received many of our staff test results back today.  All of them are negative.  We are still waiting on 28 staff test results.  We continue to give thanks for the negative test results.  Please continue to pray all those who are ill with COVID 19.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have three active COVID positive residents and four residents have recovered.  We have one presumed positive case.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. All our employees have recovered.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had two resident deaths.  We have 26 resident and 28 staff tests pending.

Tomorrow we begin indoor visitation for our Residential Residents.  Please remember to come 15 minutes prior to your visitation time to have your COVID testing completed.  We will meet you in the North parking lot and test you in your car.  Once the test comes back, if you are negative, you will be invited in to complete the sign in process.  As we look at the weather for the week ahead, we will be having visitation outdoors on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday if it is above 65 degrees.  The state prefers that we have outdoor visitation whenever possible.

Tomorrow the Church celebrates All Saints Day, a tradition dating back to 609 and Pope Boniface IV.  In 2003, Pope John Paul II marked the day by saying, “We celebrate today the solemnity of All Saints. This invites us to turn our gaze to the immense multitude of those who have already reached the blessed land and points us on the path that will lead us to that destination." The Saints are good models to look to as we seek to grow in holiness.   Let us pray for one another as we each strive to seek God.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Blessings,

Sr. Heather Jean

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

I have some good news to share.  We received the results from the Health Care resident tests, and they all came back negative.  We will test them again on Monday.  We also received 25 of our staff tests, and they all came back negative.  Today we tested the residential residents and finished the staff testing.  All the tests have gone to the lab.  I will let you know when I receive the results.  Let us pray for the health of our residents.

October 20, 2020

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today we tested our employees.  All employee tests came back negative!  We are thrilled to have outdoor visitation once again for both residential and health care families.   The weather looks beautiful for Thursday.  Our residents and staff are looking forward to this upcoming reunion.

In my last couple of letters, I shared information about post COVID pneumonia.  It is with great sadness that I share tonight that one of our residents died from post COVID pneumonia.  Per CDC and ISDH regulations we are to include this death in our COVID numbers.    Please continue to pray for our residents who have had COVID.  Let us pray for this resident’s family and for all those who have died from COVID 19.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have no active COVID positive residents and four residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. All our employees have recovered.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had two resident deaths.

This Thursday our residents will be receiving a flu shot and a pneumonia vaccine.   The pneumonia vaccine will only be given if they are due for it.  Since we are in the middle of the COVID 19 pandemic, It is very important that all residents receive the flu shot and pneumonia vaccine.  We must report our vaccination records to the CDC.  We will be in touch with any families who have declined the flu shot in the past.  We will also have to verify allergies.  We must report to the CDC if someone is not receiving one due to an allergy.  It is extremely important this year that we vaccinate our residents.  If you have any questions about flu and pneumonia vaccinations, please call me at 317-213-8430.

Please know of my continued prayers for each of you.  It is a blessing to be entrusted with the care of your loved ones.

Peace,

Sr. Heather Jean

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

I spoke with the Infection Preventionist from ISDH.  They have approved for us to begin communal dining and activities in the Health Center starting tomorrow morning.  They approved us to begin outdoor visitation on Thursday.  I know we were hoping to begin outdoor visitation for the Health Care Center tomorrow, but they want us to start after our weekly staff testing since the numbers in Indiana are high right now.  You can begin to sign up for Thursday visitation tomorrow.  See below for our updated times for Health Center Outdoor Visitation Hours.

Afternoon Hours:

A Hall 1:15 pm-2:15 pm

B Hall 3:00 pm- 4:00 pm

Evening Hours:

A Hall 4:30 pm- 5:30 pm

B Hall 6:15 pm- 7:15 pm

Please continue to pray for our residents who have had COVID.   All of them returned to the Health Care Center following CDC guidelines.  The CDC guidance is that a positive COVID resident is to be quarantined for 14 days and must be 72 hours fever free before retuning to the general population.  At this time, they are not considered contagious.  Sometimes elderly and compromised COVID 19 patients can get a secondary pneumonia.  We do have one of our residents who had COVID 19 that began showing symptoms of a secondary pneumonia today.  We are watching all recovered residents for signs of secondary pneumonia.  Please continue to pray for all those who have recovered from COVID who have secondary illnesses and for all who are ill with COVID at this time.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have no active COVID positive residents and five residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. All our employees have recovered.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had one resident death.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.  If you need to get a hold of me during the coming days, please call my cell phone or send me an e-mail.  I will be in and out of my office as I will need to assist in caring for our residents and assisting with testing.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

I know the weather is starting to get cooler.  We will begin indoor visitation on Sunday November 1.  I will be sending out more information in the coming days.  We will visit on the ground floor in the party room and rec room.

Peace,

Sr. Heather Jean

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Tomorrow is the feast of St. Luke, patron saint of doctors and artists.   St. Luke is also the author of both the Gospel of St. Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. If you have the opportunity, why not read one of his most well-known stories, the parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk 10:25-37)  It is a good message to remember in these days of turmoil and unrest in so much of our nation.

We received 59 of our resident tests back.  They were all negative!!! We give thanks for the good news.  We have four tests that are still processing.  Let us continue to pray for good health and for all those who currently are ill with COVID 19 in our state, country and world

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have no active COVID positive residents and five residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. All of our employees have recovered.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had one resident death.  We have 4 resident tests pending.

As we look to the week ahead, may we seek to show kindness to all those we encounter this week.  May we each find a way to be a good Samaritan.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Autumn teaches us how beautiful it can be to let things go.  Today on this beautiful day we are grateful at St. Paul Hermitage to be letting go of our COVID Unit.  Today our one remaining COVID positive resident was able to return to the Health Care Center.  We pray that our COVID Unit will remain closed.  We are still waiting on our test results from Thursday’s facility wide testing.  Once they are back, we will be able to open back up our Health Care Center.  We will also be able to begin family visitation.  I hope to have that clearance from ISDH on Monday.  Please continue to pray for good results and continued good health for our St. Paul Hermitage community.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have no active COVID positive residents and five residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Tomorrow the Church celebrated the feast of Teresa of Avila, a Carmelite sister from the mid 1500’s who was an administrator, a writer, and above all a visionary. Pope Paul VI proclaimed Teresa the first female Doctor of the Church in recognition of her centuries-long spiritual legacy. Here is one of her reflections:

Let nothing disturb you; Let nothing frighten you.

All things are passing. God never changes.

            Patience obtains all things.

Nothing is wanting to the one who possesses God.

            God alone suffices.

Today the residential residents enjoyed time outside. It was a breezy day but still a beautiful fall day.  Tomorrow it is supposed to be a little cooler. It is going to be jacket weather pretty soon.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have one active COVID positive resident and four residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. Twelve of our employees have recovered.  We have one employee on quarantine.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had one resident death.  We have 36 resident tests pending.

As we continue to journey through this time, let us remember the words of St. Teresa of Avila – Nothing is wanting to the one who possesses God.  God alone suffices.

We were blessed with a beautiful fall day today.  Our grounds are beautiful and it so enjoyable to look out and see the gorgeous colors of the trees.  I love this time of the year.  It has always been my favorite season.

Today we tested all the staff.   Yesterday we received our rapid tests that were back ordered.  We were grateful to be able to test our staff so quickly.  All 92 tests came back negative.  We also gave flu shots to all the staff that still needed one.  If you haven’t got your flu shot yet, I encourage you to get one.  We will do testing of all our residents in Health Care and Residential on Thursday.  We will be using the PCR tests on our residents.  The PCR tests have a lower rate of false positives.  That is why we will continue to use the PCR testing on residents.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have two active COVID positive residents and three residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. October is Clergy appreciation month!  Think of all the ministers you have known and listened to and offer a prayer of thanks for their willingness to answer God’s call to serve God’s people. If you see any of our resident priests (Fr. Wilmoth, Fr. Stan, Fr. Mike, Fr. Lutz, Fr. Hosey), take time to thank them for their ministry.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today is the Feast Day of Saint Pope John XXIII.  He is one of my favorite saints.  When I became a novice in 2010, I chose him to be my patron saint.  Jean is a derivative of John.  His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of the opening of Vatican II.  Pope John XXIII led the church during uncertain times in our world and church.  He was instrumental in negotiating peace between the United States and Russia during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  His leadership and wisdom can help us through our current times.  One of my favorite quotes from Pope John XXIII is, “Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.”  This quote has continued to guide me throughout this pandemic.  Sometimes I can get lost in the stress and fear that comes with leading during the pandemic and forget to see the potential and the possibility that each day offers.  As we move into a new week, may we seek to live into our hopes and dreams and to do what we can to make a difference in the lives of others.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have two active COVID positive residents and three residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. Twelve of our employees have recovered.  We have one employee on quarantine.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had one resident death.

We will again be testing our Health Center residents on Monday and Thursday for COVID 19.  Let us continue to pray for good health in our community, our country, and the world.

Peace,

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today was a beautiful fall day.  Our residents enjoyed time on the patio.  In Health Care we had residents outside one at a time most of the day.  They seemed to enjoy the beautiful weather.  Our residential residents enjoyed time with their loved ones during outdoor visitation.

I received some exciting news this evening.  ISDH approved our plan for having daily Mass.  We can begin having daily Mass on Sunday November 1st.  ISDH wants us to wait until the beginning of November.  This will give us time to reopen communal dining and activities for our Health Care Residents.  It will give us time without COVID in our building prior to distributing communion.  We will be moving our daily Mass time to 10:00 am.  For safety reasons we need to have St. Paul Hermitage staff serve as Eucharistic Ministers.  Our Benedictine Sisters on staff will take turns serving as the Eucharistic Minister.  We are changing Mass to 10:00 am so that our sisters are able to attend Morning Prayer and Mass with our monastic community. This is an important part of our daily horarium and I have missed it over the past seven months.  We look forward to being able to gather once again to celebrate Holy Eucharist together.

We have 2 staff and 45 resident tests pending.

Blessings on your weekend.  It is supposed to be lovely outside.  I hope you are able to get out and enjoy the beautiful fall weather.

Today was a beautiful day.  The residents enjoyed window visits and virtual chats.  The residential residents were able to get outside.  We opened windows to let the fresh air in.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have two active COVID positive residents and three residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. As we live through each day, let us take our emotions and fear to God.  Placing our hope in God, we trust that we are never alone.  This has been a very hard week.  I want you to know of my prayers for each of you and ask that you hold me and all of our staff in your prayers.  Each resident is such a blessing an integral part of our community.  I thank God for the gift of each of you.

Blessings,

Sr. Heather Jean

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Tomorrow is the Feast of Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary. The rosary appeals to many. It is simple. The constant repetition of words helps create an atmosphere in which to contemplate the mysteries of God. We sense that Jesus and Mary are with us in the joys and sorrows of life. As we journey through this time, let us ask Mary to intercede for us.  May we know the presence of Jesus through it all.

Today we tested all of the employees as we do each Tuesday. As soon as I receive the results, I will let you know.

We continue to offer video chats Tuesday through Saturday.  If you would like to set up at time to chat please contact Mist Ballard at healthcare.activities@stpaulhermitage.org.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today was a beautiful day.  It is such a gift when the sun shines all day.  The sun and the blue sky certainly lifted the spirits of the residents and the staff.  Life just feels different when the sun shines in.  It looks like we are going to have great weather this week. It is nice to be able to go outside or at least be able to open the windows.  Let us thank God for the gift of good weather.

Blessings,

Dear St. Paul Hermitage, Families:

The past few weeks have been difficult on our community.  We went seven months without a resident case of COVID 19.  We are now entering our fourth week of our Health Care outbreak.  I want to provide you with an update on the number of confirmed cases.  We have been testing residents every Monday and Thursday.  We test our staff every Tuesday.  We have received all, but three of our employee tests back.  They were all negative.  Twelve of our health care resident tests have come back so far. Eleven were negative.  One is positive.  We immediately transferred them to our COVID 19 unit.  When a resident test positive, we notify the resident and their representative of their condition and implement protocols for their care and treatment. During each shift, the nurse updates the family regarding their loved ones. The safety and wellbeing of our residents is our top priority. We are doing everything that we can to minimize the spread of COVID 19 in our community.

I remain in very close communication with Dr. Hurley and ISDH to ensure we are taking all the appropriate steps under current circumstances. We are also following guidance from the CDC and CMS to reduce the spread and impact of COVID-19, such as:

·       Enhanced infection control precautions

·       Screening residents, staff, and essential visitors for symptoms

·       Restricting visitation and entry of people to the building

·       Frequently testing staff and residents for COVID-19

·       Canceling Health Care communal dining and activities

·       Restricting therapy to individual resident rooms instead of our therapy gym

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have four active COVID positive residents and two residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. Twelve of our employees have recovered.  We have one employee on quarantine.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.  We have 3 staff tests pending and 28 resident tests pending.

I understand that connecting with your loved ones is very important.  We continue to offer video chats Tuesday through Saturday.  If you would like to set up at time to chat please contact Mist Ballard at healthcare.activities@stpaulhermitage.org.

Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns during this difficult time.  If you need to get a hold of me during the coming days, please call my cell phone or send me an e-mail.  I will be in and out of my office as I will need to assist in caring for our residents.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Tomorrow is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.  One often sees statues of St. Francis with animals around him, or a bird perched on his finger.  St. Francis was known for his love of all creation.  I would like to close our letter this evening with the prayer of St. Francis.  May it help to bring us peace during this time when COVID 19 has become personal to our community.  May God make each of us instruments of peace.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

Blessings,

Sr. Heather Jean

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today we received 78 of our staff tests back.  They were all negative.  We are testing them every Monday and Thursday.  Our residents who have tested positive continue to have minimal symptoms.  Please continue to pray for all our residents and staff that are ill currently.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have three active COVID positive residents and two residents have recovered.  We have had thirteen COVID positive employees and fourteen total COVID 19 cases. Twelve of our employees have recovered.  We have one employee on quarantine.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.  We have 3 staff tests pending and 40 resident tests pending.

Today our residential and health center residents enjoyed exercise and rosary through our in-house TV station.  Our residential residents enjoyed time outside on the patio and visiting with family during outdoor visitation.  We also have a few of our residents who enjoy working on puzzles.  They are set up in the library to work on puzzles individually at their own tables.  It is a great way for them to socialize with each other at a distance and still work on puzzles.  I enjoy passing the daily puzzle parties as I head to and from my apartment.

Blessings on your weekend.  I will keep you updated as our tests come in.

Peace,

Sr. Heather Jean
