Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Our next vaccination clinic is February 5, 2021.  We still have a few remaining vaccination consent forms that need to be signed.  They are available at the front door.  Tomorrow is the last day to come by and sign your loved one’s consent.  We are looking forward to our second vaccination clinic.

Visitation this week will need to be altered some do to our vaccination clinic.  We will have indoor visitation Monday- Wednesday.  We will have visitation in the garage on Thursday and Friday.  We will not have any visitation this weekend due to the probability of side effects after the second vaccination.  Dr. Hurley recommended that we allow our residents to rest over the weekend.  Since many may feel fatigued and achy after their vaccination.  We will resume our normal indoor visitation schedule on Monday February 8, 2020.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have 9 recovered residents.  We have 20 recovered employees.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had two resident deaths. Marion county’s positivity rate is currently 8%.

Today is the final day of January and National Hot Chocolate Day.  There are health benefits to drinking hot chocolate. Cocoa contains significant amounts of antioxidants that may help prevent cancer. It has also been shown that the cocoa beans help with digestion. The flavonoids that are found in the cocoa also have a positive effect on arterial health.  Enjoy a cup of Hot Chocolate tonight to celebrate.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today we tested our staff using rapid tests.  They all came back negative.  I am grateful for continued good health for our staff and residents.  We will test our residents tomorrow.

I am attaching our indoor visitation policy as a reminder.  We will need to move immediately back to the garage if the rate is above 10% on any given day.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

January 24, 2021

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Our positivity rate in Marion County has dropped below 10%.  This is good news.  Many of you have asked when we can move back indoors for visitation.  CMS requires that the positivity rate remain below 10% for two weeks.  We will be able to move our visitation from the garage to the party room once we meet this goal.  We also will be able to reduce the amount of testing for staff and residents at this time.

The staff tests we did on Thursday all came back negative.  We will have staff testing tomorrow using the rapid tests.  I am grateful for continued good health for our staff and residents.  Our resident who is a presumed positive is doing very well.

Our next vaccination clinic is February 5, 2021.  Our vaccination consent forms for our second clinic will be available at the front door Starting tomorrow.  Please come stop by to sign them before January 29, if you have a loved one in Health Care.

January 20, 2021

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Late yesterday evening we had a residential resident who started feeling ill.  They were tested for COVID 19 with a rapid test and they came back positive.  That individual was moved to the COVID Unit.  We have quarantined the residents who had close contact with the individual who is ill.  We will test the residential residents again on Friday.  All the resident PCR tests from yesterday came back negative.  I know this may be confusing since later in the day we had a rapid positive.  Sometimes the viral load is low until the virus develops and activates.  That is why we are required to test so often when the positivity rate is so high.  Each test is only accurate for the moment in time that it is taken.  As of yesterday morning, no one was positive.  We did another test.  Let us continue to pray for all who are ill with COVID at this time.

Our staff will be tested tomorrow with the PCR test.  We should receive those tests back this weekend.  We received the PCR test back from our staff member who tested positive on the rapid test on Monday.   We praise God that it was negative.

Our next vaccination clinic is February 5, 2021.  We will have our vaccination consent forms for our second clinic available at the front door.  We will have them available for you to sign from January 25-29.  If you have a loved one in Health Care, please stop by next week to sign the consent form.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have 9 recovered residents.  We have 20 recovered employees.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had two resident deaths. Marion county’s positivity rate is currently 10.9%.

We continue to have outdoor visitation in our garage and virtual chats daily.  Please contact our front desk to sign up for either form of visitation.   Our residents enjoy visiting with you.  Thank you for taking advantage of the many ways that we can connect at this time.

Let us continue to pray for our country that the transition of leadership will be peaceful and effective.  That we would all continue to work together to become a more unified nation.

January 18, 2021

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today we tested our staff.  We used the rapid tests today and we will do PCR tests on Thursday.  We tested 73 staff members.  We had one positive test.  The individual who tested positive is not symptomatic.  We ran a PCR test to confirm the positive test.  Last week we had three false positives.  Two staff and one resident.  That is why the confirmatory PCR test is so important.  The employee that tested positive is quarantining at home until we receive the PCR test results back.  The individual that tested positive worked today.  They are a member of our leadership team.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have 9 recovered residents.  We have 20 recovered employees.  We have one presumed positive employee who is quarantining at home. We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had two resident deaths.  Marion county’s positivity rate is currently 12.

We continue to have outdoor visitation in our garage and virtual chats daily.  Please contact our front desk to sign up for either form of visitation.   Our residents enjoy visiting with you.  Thank you for taking advantage of the many ways that we can connect at this time.

We received our vaccination consent forms for our second clinic.  We will have them available for you to sign from January 25-29.  If you have a loved one in Health Care, please stop by next week to sign the consent form.  Our next clinic is February 5, 2021.

January 17, 2021

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

I have some good news to share.  Our resident who tested positive on the rapid test, tested negative on the PCR test.  We did another rapid test, and it was also negative.  This individual was able to move back to Health Care.  Dr. Hurley also spoke to IDH regarding our resident who had some reoccurring symptoms post COVID 19.  It was decided by Dr. Hurley and IDH that she does not need to be on the COVID unit.  Many individuals who have COVID have symptoms that ling long after they are contagious.  She first exhibited symptoms and was moved to quarantine on December 20.  They do not believe that she needs to be in COVID isolation.  She also returned to Health Care. I know that this may seem confusing.  We sometimes get different recommendations from IDH depending on who we speak with.  I am confident in Dr. Hurley’s judgment and knowledge regarding quarantine practices.  He spoke with the infection preventionist doctor at IDH prior to us making any moves.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have 9 recovered residents.  We have 20 recovered employees.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had two resident deaths.  Marion county’s positivity rate is currently 12.9.

We continue to have outdoor visitation in our garage and virtual chats daily.  Please contact our front desk to sign up for either form of visitation.   Our residents enjoy visiting with you.  Thank you for taking advantage of the many ways that we can connect at this time.

Tomorrow is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  He worked tirelessly to combat racism and bring about a more just society.  We are still working to make his dream come true in our society.  Let us continue to do our part to make his dream of unity and equality for all people a reality in our day to day lives.

January 14, 2021

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today one of our residents who was recently in the COVID unit had another COVID 19 rapid test at the request of IDH.  This was done because after a week back on the unit she began to show some signs of fatigue and lack of appetite.  This is not uncommon post COVID 19 in the elderly.  She tested positive on the rapid test.  IDH asked us to move her back to the COVID unit for another 14 days.  This is disappointing news.  We immediately tested all residents on the Health Center.  We had 30 negative tests and one positive test.  We immediately moved the individual who tested positive to the COVID Unit until their PCR test comes back.  This per IDH testing and quarantining guidance.  This individual does have symptoms, which is why they were moved to the unit.  We will need to place some of our Health Center residents back in quarantine.  I will call you tomorrow if your loved one had contact with our presumed positive.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have 8 recovered residents.  We have one active resident.  One presumed positive resident with a pending PCR test.  We have 19 recovered employees.  We have one active employee who is quarantining at home.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had two resident deaths.  Marion county’s positivity rate is currently 14.4.

We continue to have outdoor visitation in our garage and virtual chats daily.  Please contact our front desk to sign up for either form of visitation.   Our residents enjoy visiting with you.  Thank you for taking advantage of the many ways that we can connect at this time.

I will not go home to the monastery for my days off but will remain in the building while our COVID Unit is open.  I will write daily updates Sunday- Thursday.  Know of my prayers for each of you.  Let us continue to pray for good health as we wait for our second vaccination.

Our CVS Vaccination Clinic will take place on January 8, 2021.  We are grateful to receive an early vaccination date.  We have passed out the information on the Moderna vaccine to our residents who are able to consent on their own.  It is the same information that I have shared with you.  I will have consent forms available at the front door Tuesday and Wednesday for Health Center residents.  Please come by and sign the consent form for your loved one’s vaccine if they live in the Health Care Center.  Forms will be available Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 am -5 pm.  Residential residents can sign their own consent.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have 8 recovered residents.  We have one active resident case.  We have one presumed positive.  We have 17 recovered.  We have two active employees who are quarantining at home.    We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had two resident deaths.  Marion county’s positivity rate is currently 14.1.

Today the Church celebrates Epiphany, the coming of the magi to honor Jesus.  They brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  As we enter a new year, let us take time to reflect on what gifts we might bring to Jesus this year.

With Love,

Sr. Heather Jean

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Happy New Years!  I hope 2021 is off to a good start and that it is filled with many blessings.  Yesterday, I received all our resident tests back and they were negative.  We are grateful for continued good health for our residents.

Today one of our nurses woke up with symptoms of COVID 19.  She had a known exposure to COVID 19.  She has not worked in the Health Care Center since she found out about her exposure on Tuesday afternoon.  She had a rapid test, and it came back positive.  We will also complete a PCR test.  She is quarantining at home.  She last worked A-Hall on Tuesday.   I have contacted IDH to find out about quarantine requirements.  We may need to quarantine A Hall.  The guidance is anyone who had 15 or more minutes of contact within the last 72 hours.  We are right at 72 hours.  We will call you if your loved one needs to be quarantined.  Let us continue to pray for all who are ill at this time with COVID 19.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have 8 recovered residents.  We have one active resident case.  We have one presumed positive.  We have 18 recovered employees.  We have one active employee who is quarantining at home.    We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations.  We have had two resident deaths.  Marion county’s positivity rate is currently 13.8.

Blessings to you this New Year’s Day.  May 2021 be filled with many blessings and brighter days.    We are grateful for our upcoming vaccination clinic.  This helps to keep hope on the horizon.  Know of my prayers for you.
