Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

It is hard to believe that the weekend has come and gone.  We are grateful for a weekend of family visitation.  As summer is ending, we are working on planning an outdoor end of summer movie party.  We are planning to show Sound of Music outside in early September.  We will pop popcorn and have a nice evening together before the fall weather hits.

During the month of September for our employee appreciation, we will highlight employees who are living out our core values of hospitality and teamwork.   We have several $5.00 and $10.00 gift cards to pass out when we see these core values in action.  We are asking for your help too.  If you have an experience with a member of our team where you have experienced our core values of hospitality or teamwork, please let me know via e-mail.  I will then honor that person’s good work with a note and small token of our appreciation.  You can also participate if you would like by purchasing a few $5.00 or $10.00 gift cards to help honor our team members.  It is so important to recognize our staff.  Thank you for your help and for sharing your stories.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees and ten total COVID 19 cases. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Know of my prayers for each of you, as we begin a new week.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org

Blessings,

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

This week the weather has been beautiful. Today was filled with family visitation, patio time and a library puzzle party.  We are grateful to be able to spend time together in God’s creation.

This coming week we will begin testing our employees routinely for COVID 19.  We have been instructed by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services to test based on the positivity rate in our area.  Per their guidance we will test monthly if Marion County’s positivity rate is below 5%.  If it is between 5% and 10%, we will test weekly.  If Marion County’s positivity rate is greater than 10%, we will test twice a week.  Currently, Marion County’s positivity rate is 6.6%.  We are required to test weekly.  We have chosen to test on Tuesdays.  Tests will be administered by our infection control nurse, Joan Lutgring.  We have received a rapid testing machine from Health and Human Services.  I will be helping Joan process the tests and upload our results to ISDH and the CDC.  Please pray for us as we begin this process this week.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees and ten total COVID 19 cases. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Yesterday, and interim rule was passed by CMS regarding pandemic education, staff trainings and COVID testing for staff.  We will be testing staff on a regular basis. CMS has created a system to determine the frequency of testing based on the positive test rate in the area your facility is located in.  The range of testing is form once a month to twice a week depending on the positivity rate in Marion County.  We will be putting this into place starting in September.  I am working on our policy.  We will also begin to have mandatory bi-weekly infection control in-servicing.  CMS has a wide range of topics for us to cover.  These infection prevention in-services will be taught by Joan Lutgring, Rn and myself.  Joan serves as our facilities Infection Preventionist.

Tomorrow is Sr. Maureen Therese’s birthday.  Offer a special prayer for her and for all she does for the St. Paul Community. I know she will appreciate it. She has served at St. Paul Hermitage for many years and we are grateful for the many gifts that she shares with our community.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees and ten total COVID 19 cases. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Know of my prayers for each of you.  As we make this journey through the pandemic, I am very thankful for each of you.  You have been amazing through it all.  If you have any questions, you can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Tomorrow we will once again have virtual chats.  Please contact our activity directors to arrange a time.  They can be reached at healthcare.activities@stpaulhermitage.org and residential.activities@stpaulhermitage.org.  We look forward to facilitating these chats with your loved ones.

It is supposed to be in the 90’s tomorrow, but then start cooling down.  If you are attending outdoor visitation, be sure to wear sunscreen and drink lots of water.  Rain is predicted Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  Please keep an eye on the weather.  If it is raining, we will not have outdoor visitation. August 23, 2020

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

This weekend was beautiful and full of family visits.  I have had many questions regarding what our plan is for visitation once the fall weather comes.  We are in the process of updating that policy.  We hope to have it out to you soon.  In the meantime, we felt like it is time again for some reminders regarding visitation.

  1. You must sign up by noon the day prior to your visit.  We will not be able to let you stay for a visit if you have not signed up in advance.

  2. Each Resident may only have two visitors per assigned patio time.

  3. Residents, staff, and visitors will be required to wear a face mask.

  4. We do not have restrooms available inside as we are not able to have visitors inside per the Marion County Health Department.

  5. Visiting areas will be set up with six feet in between each visitor and resident.  Staff will be assigned to monitor to ensure that social distancing practices are followed throughout the visit.

  6. We are asking that family members bring their own lawn chairs to use while the are visiting.  We will disinfect the resident’s chairs in between each visit.

  7. All visitors will be screened for fever, cough, sore throat, and shortness of breath prior to beginning their visitation.  If any symptoms are present, visitation will not be allowed.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine employees who have had COVID 19 and ten total cases of COVID 19. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Blessings on your week ahead.  Let us continue to hold one another in prayer.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today was the perfect summer day.  It was beautiful out and our patio was full from early morning until dusk.  We are grateful for the opportunity to be able to enjoy the final days of summer together.  Our Health Center Residents enjoyed time with their loved ones.  Many of them enjoyed summer treats of shakes, sundaes, and floats.  It is a gift for them to be able to enjoy these special summer treats.  I think these are the moments that I will remember the most during this pandemic.  The way that you continue to add meaning and joy to your loved one’s days in unprecedented times is heroic.  It is the little things you do that add so much to their day.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees and ten total COVID 19 cases. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.  We are grateful for the continued good health of our staff and pray for an end to our current pandemic.

Tomorrow I look forward to Residential Family visitation and celebrating the Indy 500.  I am sure it will be a great day.  Blessings on the rest of your weekend.  If you have any questions, you can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today we received ten of our staff tests back.  They were all negative.  We are grateful for this good news.  Let us continue to prayer for good test results and an end to this pandemic.

Throughout the course of this pandemic, we have had many residents ordering from Door Dash, Grub Hub and Instacart.  These food delivery services are wonderful and our residents enjoy being able to get food from the outside. However, we are running into a problem.  It seems GPS directs people to our dock door instead of the front door.  We have had food left throughout our grounds.  We are having to hunt for food and in many cases, we are paying to replace food.  Since March we have replaced over $2,000.00 worth of food that was left in the wrong place.  What we are asking of you is that if you order food for your loved one or if you know that they order food please put in the comments section that we are an assisted living and nursing facility located at the corner of southern and 17th Avenue.  Please let them know our front door faces 17thAvenue and is located under the breezeway.  Please help us to lower the amount of times that staff is searching our grounds for missing food.  We appreciate your help in this matter.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees and 10 employee positive cases. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have 87 tests pending due to the mandatory ISDH regulations.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or by e-mail at administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

This week the weather has been beautiful. The weekend was full of family visitation and patio time.  The weather for the coming week is predicted to be sunny and temperatures are in the low to mid 80’s.  We are grateful to be able to spend time together in God’s creation.

Our beauty shop will open again tomorrow.  We do need to alter our schedule.  Our beautician has asked that I share with our families and residents that she is only able to work part-time at this time.  Liz was recently diagnosed with cancer and receiving treatment.  She asks for your prayers.  She desires to continue to work at St. Paul Hermitage as the work brings joy to her life and our residents’ lives.  She is only able to work two days a week.  Liz will provide beauty shop services to our Residential Residents on Monday and Tuesday.  We will have an additional beautician working on Thursday and Friday to provide beauty shop services to our Health Center Residents.   She will begin on Thursday August 27.  We will not have beauty shop services on Wednesday.  Please hold Liz in your prayers.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today our Residential Residents enjoyed time on the patio in the morning.  I also stopped in on a puzzle party upstairs.  It is so good to see our residents out in common areas doing what they enjoy with the proper precautions. Our Health Center Residents enjoyed visiting with family members.  It was a beautiful day today inside and out.

We finished our staff testing today.  I am grateful for our leadership team who worked hard to get close to 100 tests done in a short amount of time.  The National Guard will be picking up the tests tomorrow.  Please remember that beginning tomorrow we will have a high number of pending tests.  This number will be reflective of our ISDH testing that is being conducted in every nursing home.  Please continue to pray for the health of our staff and residents during this pandemic.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees and ten total positive cases of COVID 19 among our employees.  Seven of our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  Two of our staff are quarantining at this time.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today our Residential Residents enjoyed time on the patio in the morning. In the afternoon they enjoyed time outside with their families.  Sr. Anna Marie led the rosary in our chapel.  Misti and Megan led bingo in the Health Care Center dining room. Our Health Center Residents love bingo.  We are grateful to be able to offer a variety of activities now while practicing social distancing and wearing masks.

On Monday, we will open our Health Center Dining room.  Currently, we can have fourteen residents eat in the dining room and maintain social distance.  Our interdisciplinary team has worked hard to create a list of residents who will eat in the dining room.  The remainder of our residents will continue to eat in their rooms.  We prioritized residents who have mid or late stage dementia. These residents eat better in the communal dining area.  We will continue to evaluate this list weekly and adjust as needed.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have one resident test pending.

Last week ISDH announced that they will be conducting COVID 19 testing in all nursing homes throughout the state as they did in June.  St. Paul Hermitage employees, contracted workers, and hospice family visitors will be tested.  ISDH surveyors will drop off test kits on Friday and they will pick them back up on Saturday afternoon. We do not have to test anyone who has previously had COVID 19.  Our nursing management team will administer and supervise the testing process.  The tests will be sent to an ISDH lab site.  The results will be back in 5-7 days.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have one resident test pending. We have had nine COVID positive employees.  Seven of our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  Two of our staff are quarantining at this time.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

The weather has scattered storms predicted throughout the week.  Please keep an eye on the weather if you are attending outdoor family visitation.  We hope and pray the storms come before and after our visitation times. If it is raining or storming at your scheduled visitation time, we will need to cancel.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

This evening a residential resident was assessed using our change in condition assessment form from the Indiana State Department of Health.  In consultation with this resident’s Primary Care Physician and Dr. Daniel Hurley, our Medical Director, it was decided that a COVID 19 test should be ordered in addition to other tests. This resident is on isolation precautions.  Of course, there can be many causes for the symptoms the resident is having.   This is a precautionary measure to make sure that we catch any case of COVID 19 early to prevent the spread of it in our community.

It is always hard to share this kind of news because I know that it very stressful to receive.  The roller-coaster of emotions we have been living through these past months do not seem to end.  And, yet, during it all, we are called to lean into Jesus’ love and trust that we are not alone.

Today at Mass we sang the Hymn, “Come and Follow Me.”  The refrain is beautiful.

“Come, follow me and live; do not be afraid.

Believe and trust in me; your faith will give you strength.

Leave all your fears behind you;

let your heart be free, for I will be your guide.

Oh, come and follow me.”

It reminds me to continue to trust in God in the midst of the uncertainties that arise throughout this pandemic.  God is guiding and holding us.  Let’s continue to give our fears and anxieties to God, who continues to call us to follow and believe.  May this assurance continue to give us peace as we journey through this pandemic together.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had eight COVID positive employees. We have two tests pending.  All of our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

I am grateful to have more good news to share! Our remaining two tests came back and they are negative. We rejoice in this good news.  Let us continue to pray for our employees who are ill at this time.

I have had several questions regarding our return to work policy.  We follow the CDC guidelines for return to work.  This is no longer a test-based return as it was previously.  The CDC has found that people are testing positive months after their first positive test.  ISDH has now changed its guidance.  They are no longer recommending testing individuals who have previously tested positive.  Going forward we will not include individuals who have had COVID 19 in our testing efforts.  To return to work, we require that staff members be 14 days past their original positive test and 72-hours symptom free.  We make sure that enough time has past that they are not returning to work contagious.  Since this is a new virus that we are dealing with we continue to adapt our policy to reflect the most updated recommendations of the CDC and ISDH.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees. Seven of our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  Two staff members who tested positive are out on a fourteen-day quarantine.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.  The weather looks like it will be lovely for our outdoor family visitation.    If you have any questions, you can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

We received seventeen of our staff tests back and they were negative. We are still waiting on two staff tests to come back.  Hopefully, we will receive them back tomorrow.  We rejoice in this good news.  Let us continue to pray for our employees who are ill at this time.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

This evening I received seven of our staff Covid 19 test results.  We are grateful that six of the tests came back negative.  One of them came back positive.  This is someone who tested positive in April.  They were tested again because of the exposure and because it had been more than 90 days since their original positive.  I have been in contact with Dr. Daniel Hurley, the CDC and ISDH.  Since this virus is so new, it is difficult to say if this staff member is infected again with active COVD or if she has viral debris left from her previous infection.  Currently, we are waiting on further guidance from ISDH regarding next steps to take.  We will continue with outdoor visitation until a time when we are advised not to do so.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees. Seven of our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  Twos staff members who tested positive are out on a fourteen-day quarantine.  We have 16 staff tests pending.  We have 34 resident tests pending.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

It is hard to believe that tomorrow is Friday already. May your weekend be filled with many graces and blessings.  If you have any questions, you can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Today our residential residents enjoyed time with their loved ones during outdoor family visitation.  The weather has been beautiful.  We are grateful for the cooler weather that makes visiting more comfortable.  Our Activity Directors are continuing to find creative ways to engage our residents.  Our residents have been busy with art projects, puzzle packets, bingo and pokeno.  We are also grateful to have daily rosary in the chapel with Sr. Anna Marie.  All activities are done with social distancing and face masks.  Our Activities Department continues to go above and beyond creating an activities program that is both engaging and safe during this time of pandemic.  We are blessed.

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had nine COVID positive employees. Eight of our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  Our staff member who tested positive is out on a fourteen-day quarantine.  We have 23 staff tests pending.  We have 34 resident tests pending.  We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Tomorrow is the Feast of the Transfiguration.  The feast commemorates one of the pinnacles of Jesus' earthly life, when he revealed his divinity to three of his closest disciples by means of a miraculous and supernatural light.   What a gift to celebrate Christ’s power in our lives.   There is a beautiful song that we sing at Mass called, Transfigure Us, O Lord.  Below you will find the refrain and one of the verses from this song.  I encourage you to ponder these words and thank God for such a blessing.

Transfigure us, O Lord

Transfigure us, O Lord.

Break the chains that bind us;

Speak your healing word, and

Where you lead, we’ll follow.

Transfigure us, O Lord

Pardon for the sinner, a shepherd for the sheep,

A drink of living water for all who thirst and seek,

And feasting at your table the lowly and the least.

Let us continue to prayer for one another as we journey through this time of pandemic. If you have any questions, you can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Many blessings,

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

I shared yesterday that one of our employees tested positive for COVID 19. We tested all our Residential residents today as a precautionary measure since the individual who tested positive works primarily on Residential.  We also tested a few Health Care Center residents who had been in contact with the employee.  No residents are symptomatic.  The tests will be returned to us in 48-72 hours.

Yesterday was a hard day for all of us when we heard news of a positive COVID test result.  It was disappointing for our whole St. Paul Hermitage Community.  I am grateful that we are still able to have outdoor family visitation. Let us continue to pray for one another and hold each other close as we wait for the test results.

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

August is National Wellness Month.  Wellness involves our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.  During this time of pandemic when things are not as they normally are, it can be easy to forget to take care of ourselves. This week spend some time thinking about ways to do something for you. Why not take time each day this month to do something special to take care of yourself: an extra nap, calling a friend,  some time outdoors, praying the rosary, reading a good book, staying hydrated… the possibilities are endless! One way that I am planning on taking care of myself is by staying at the monastery on my days off.  This way I can spend time with my community. It is good for my soul to spend time with my sisters.  I am off Friday and Saturday.  Of course, I will be close if something comes up. This is one way I will be taking care of myself this month.  What will you do?

Our current COVID 19 status is that we have had no COVID 19 positive residents.  We have had eight COVID positive employees. All our staff are recovered and have returned to work.  We have one staff test pending.  This staff member will remain off until the pending results are in.  It can 24- 72 hours to receive results back.  We are monitoring all the residents at this time.  No residents are symptomatic. We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

Blessings to you as we enter a new week.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Blessings,

Dear St. Paul Hermitage Families,

Where did July go?  August is upon us, and some students begin their new school year this week.   Growing up my mom was a teacher and a principal.  She had summers off with us.  On the first day of school my dad would sing the Hallelujah chorus as he passed out our lunches and wished us well as we headed back to school.  The first day of school is always special and filled with a mixture of excitement and anticipation of what the year ahead will bring.  This year brings more anxiety then normal. Just as we have had to adjust our routine here, students and teachers are adjusting to new guidelines as well.   Please pray for them as they adjust to social distancing and wearing masks throughout their school day.

We have had no COVID 19 related hospitalizations or deaths for both employees and residents.

The rain and storms held off long enough for us to have our afternoon visitation for Health Center Families.  A gentle rain came this evening causing us to cancel our visitation.  We are grateful that we were able to have some visitation today.  It means so much to our residents.  We look forward to Residential visitation tomorrow.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  You can reach me at 317-213-8430 or administrator@stpaulhermitage.org.

Blessings,
